HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – Northern Kentucky men's basketball's
Jalen Tate has been named the Horizon League Freshman of the Week after helping lead the Norse to a perfect 3-0 week and clinch NKU's first Horizon League Regular-Season Championship.
Tate embodies Northern Kentucky's defensive mindset and helped set the tone for NKU's three-straight wins, with the Norse holding UIC, IUPUI and Youngstown State to a combined 34.8 percent shooting, including a mere 27.1 percent from three.
The native of Pickerington, Ohio (Pickerington Central), contributed in nearly every facet of the game. Tate had nine points, six boards, three assists, a block and a steal against UIC Friday night. He closed the week with nine points, three steals and a block against IUPUI. Over the course of the three-game stretch, Tate averaged 8.0 points, 3.7 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.7 steals.
NKU won its final three games and claimed the program's first regular-season Horizon League crown. The Norse earned the No. 1 seed in the upcoming 2018 Little Caesars Horizon League Basketball Championship, held at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, March 2-6, and will face the winner of the 8/9 matchup between Cleveland State and Youngstown State.
