LAS VEGAS – Northern Kentucky women's basketball suffered a 77-54 setback on the opening day of the Puerto Rico Classic-Las Vegas, falling to Portland State by a 77-54 tally. With the loss, the Norse move to 2-8 on the season, while the Vikings improved to 5-4.
Stat Leaders
- Redshirt-senior forward Rebecca Lyttle led the team in scoring and rebounds with her second double-double of the season and the fourth of her career. Lyttle netted 16 points and 13 rebounds, nine of which were offensive boards. All were season bests for Lyttle.
- Junior forward Kasey Uetrecht was just shy of double-digit scoring with nine points and also added five rebounds and three assists.
- Senior guard Kelley Wiegman and freshman guard Laura Thomas both dished out four assists, a career high for Thomas.
- Thomas and freshman guard Hannah Clark chipped in eight points, a new career best for Clark.
First Half Summary
- Lyttle was close to recording a double-double in the first half alone, leading the team with 11 points and eight rebounds.
- Redshirt-freshman guard Taryn Taugher added six points courtesy of two 3-pointers, the only triples of the night for the Norse.
- NKU shot 33.3 percent from the field on 11-of-33 shooting. Portland State also put up 33 shots, making 16 of them for 48.5 percent. The Vikings were also 4-of-8 from 3-point range in the half.
Second Half Summary
- Uetrecht scored seven of her nine points in the second half to lead the scoring charge.
- As a team, NKU shoot 26.7 percent from the field, while the Vikings ran away with the game on 14-of-26 shooting for 53.8 percent.
- Clark and Thomas each added four points off the bench, with Thomas' points coming from a flawless performance from the free throw line. She also added a pair of assists and a steal.
Norse Notes
- The meeting with Portland State was the first in program history.
- NKU had 17 turnovers compared to 21 miscues from the Vikings, which marks the first time this season that the Norse have had fewer turnovers than a Division I opponent.
- The Vikings outscored the Norse 38-24 in the paint and outrebounded NKU 40-36.
- Portland State shot 50.8 percent from the field, just the second time this season that an opponent has shot above 50.0 percent.
