INDIANAPOLIS – The Horizon League announced its preseason poll for the 2016-17 women's basketball campaign on Wednesday afternoon, which was voted upon by coaches, media members and sports information directors from each of the 10 member institutions. The Norse moved up two spots from last year's poll and are expected to finish sixth in the League.
"Preseason polls are what they are," commented first-year head coach
Camryn Whitaker. "We play in a very competitive League with lots of great teams and great coaches. Our team is excited to compete at a high level and hopes to be in a position at the end of the year for postseason play."
Northern Kentucky received 132 points in the poll, ahead of Oakland, Cleveland State, Valparaiso and UIC. Reigning HL champion received 29 first-place votes for the top spot in the poll with 299 votes, followed by Detroit Mercy with 253 votes. Milwaukee is expected to finish third after receiving 246 votes, while Youngstown State (195) and Wright State (147) round out the top five.
Last season, the Norse were picked to finish eighth in the League and finished the year tied for fifth with a 9-9 record in League action. NKU graduated First Team All-League honoree
Christine Roush, but returns All-Freshman Team member
Molly Glick and NKU's all-tournament representative,
Kasey Uetrecht. At the League Championship, the Norse advanced to the semifinals and nearly took down No. 1 seed Green Bay in overtime, but fell to the eventual champions, 80-78.
The Norse open up the 2016-17 season on Tuesday, Nov. 8, with an exhibition game against Berea College scheduled for 7 p.m. at BB&T Arena. The team then hits the road for the first regular-season contest, taking on Indiana State on Nov. 11.
