HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – For the second consecutive season, Northern Kentucky University's
Christine Roush has earned a spot on the Academic All-Atlantic Sun Conference team, the league office announced on Thursday.
Roush, a junior guard from Louisville, Kentucky, enters Friday's first-round Atlantic Sun Championship contest averaging 13.2 points and 4.2 rebounds per game. She leads the team in 3-point field goals made (54) and attempted (146) and free throws made (109) and attempted (125). Her 87.2 percent accuracy from the charity stripe leads the Atlantic Sun and would rank 22nd nationally if NKU was able to be included in the NCAA statistics as a reclassifying institution.
In addition to being a leader on the court for the Norse, Roush is a leader in the classroom as well. She boasts a 3.741 grade point average as a biological sciences major.
"We are thrilled for Christine to earn this honor," NKU head coach
Dawn Plitzuweit said. "She is truly an impressive young lady who is passionate about her work in the classroom and is committed to being her best on the basketball court as well. She is a great example for the young girls in our community – showing that you can be a student and an athlete and excel in both areas."
Roush, who earned a spot on the All-Atlantic Sun second team on Wednesday, scored in double figures in 20 games, including six 20-plus point performances this season. She recorded a career-high 29 points on Dec. 15 in a road contest at Marquette, knocking down five 3-pointers and going 6-for-6 from the free-throw line. She logged the first double-double of her collegiate career on Jan. 29 with 24 points and 12 rebounds, a career-high mark, as the Norse defeated Stetson, 68-62, in The Bank of Kentucky Center.
Against conference opponents, Roush poured in 15.1 points per game to top the team and dished out 1.6 assists per contest. She shot 46.8 percent (65-for-139) from the floor and 42.9 percent (33-for-77) from long range against Atlantic Sun teams.
Roush and her teammates earned the No. 3 seed in the upcoming Atlantic Sun Championship, which will begin Friday, after finishing the regular season with a 17-11 overall record and an 8-6 mark in conference play. NKU hosts No. 6 South Carolina Upstate in a 7 p.m. contest in Regents Hall. For more information on NKU's postseason, please visit http://www.nkunorse.com/postseason.
The A-Sun introduced the new sport-by-sport academic all-conference teams in the 2011-12 academic year to recognize student-athletes who embody the conference's mission of Building Winners for Life. All the members of the team boast a 3.30 GPA or better and participated in at least half of their team's games.
