EDISON, N.J. – On the season's penultimate day, the Northern Kentucky University men's tennis team was dominant in victories over La Salle and St. Francis (N.Y.) in the National Invitation Tennis Tournament, hosted by the New Jersey Institute of Technology.
The Norse defeated La Salle (10-10) by a 7-0 score before besting St. Francis (N.Y.) (4-17), 6-1.
In the day's early match against La Salle, the Norse jumped out to a quick start in doubles play, with
Pierce Kohls and
Guillaume Berman teaming to defeat Trevor Donovan and De'Sean Fennell on Court 1, 8-3.
Andre Correa and
Christopher Angulo dominated in 8-0 fashion over Thomas MacLeod and Hunter Selman on Court 3 before
Balint Zsidai and
Jody Maginley claimed an 8-6 win over Chas Berenato and Joseph LaBate in the No. 2 flight.
Each of NKU's top five singles players claimed straight-set victories, with Correa needing a 7-5 second set to defeat Fennell at the No. 2 flight. Only
Cameron Johnson's match against Robert Kasinow went to a third set super tiebreaker, which Johnson claimed by a 10-8 score.
In the afternoon match against St. Francis (N.Y.), again the Norse swept through doubles play, this time with Johnson getting in the action, teaming with Angulo to defeat Ricardo Garcia and Martin Grunin in the No.3 flight, 8-3.
Kohls, Maginley and Zsidai each won their singles matches without surrendering a game, and Berman in the top flight dropped just one in his first set.
NKU, now 6-16 on the season, closes out the 2013 season tomorrow afternoon against the hosts NJIT. First serve is scheduled for noon.
