DAYTON, Ohio –
Pierce Kohls and
Andre Correa each won their individual flights as the Northern Kentucky University men's tennis team saw success at the Raider Shootout, played at Arthur Fisher Park.
In addition, Correa and
Christopher Angulo teamed to win their doubles draw while Balint Zsidai won the back-draw in his singles flight.
Kohls, playing in the 'A' singles flight, defeated Ohio Dominican's Walid Gtari, 6-4, 2-6, 10-5, in the finals to finish off a 4-0 weekend of singles play. Correa's draw in the 'B' singles matched him up against Wright State's Mysels Harris, with Correa coming back to take a 3-6, 6-4, 11-9 win.
After Zsidai and
Jimmy Caccamo both suffered first-round losses in the 'D' singles flight, the teammates battled through the back-draw to face each other in the consolation semifinals, where Zsidai took a thrilling 9-8 victory before winning the consolation final against Northwestern Ohio's Rastko Tatarevic, 8-3.
Angulo and Correa won the 'D' doubles flight with an 8-1 victory over Walsh's Jarred Gable and Alex Portelance, 8-1, in the final. Zsidai and Caccamo teamed up in the 'C' doubles flight to defeat the RMU team of Andre Coiro and Travis Denny, 9-7, before falling in the semifinals to Rui Silva and David Constantinescu of Eastern Illinois, 8-4.
The Raider Shootout marked the end of NKU's fall schedule. The Norse will pick up dual-match play on Jan. 20 against SEC Tournament runner-up and NCAA Tournament participant Kentucky.
