HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The Northern Kentucky University women's basketball team has received a berth in the NCAA Division II Tournament, and the Norse will be the No. 8 seed in the Midwest Regional at Houghton, Mich.
NKU (20-9) will meet No. 1 seed and host Michigan Tech in the opening round of the Midwest Regional this Friday night at 6 p.m. Michigan Tech, which is ranked No. 5 nationally in the NCAA Division II poll, won the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship and is 28-2 overall.
This marks the fifth consecutive year that NKU has earned a trip to the NCAA Division II Tournament. The Norse were the top seed and host for last season's Midwest Regional, but Michigan Tech eliminated NKU in the semifinals by a 76-53 score.
The NKU/Michigan Tech winner will advance to the regional semifinals to meet either No. 5 seed Findlay (21-8) or No. 4 seed Wisconsin-Parkside (23-7) on Saturday. The regional championship game is scheduled Monday night at 7 p.m.
Indianapolis (26-3) is the No. 2 seed for the Midwest Regional and will take on No. 7 seed Northern Michigan (21-9). The other first-round game features No. 6 seed Southern Indiana (22-8) and No. 3 seed Drury (26-6).
NKU has won two national championships (2000, '08), and the Norse have captured six regional titles.
