HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – For the second time in his collegiate career, Northern Kentucky University's
Steven Beattie has reached the pinnacle of individual achievement, as he was named the 2010 Ron Lenz National Player of the Year for men's soccer.
The selection headlined the announcement of the Daktronics NCAA Division II All-America team, which included Beattie as a first-team honoree for the third consecutive season.
Paul Andrews was also honored as a second team All-American.
Beattie, a senior from Skerries, Ireland, has shattered every offensive record in NKU soccer history, setting single-season records for goals (24), assists (16), points (64) and shots (139). On Sept. 17 against Indianapolis, Beattie tied a school record by recording four assists in a single game. His 75 career goals entering Thursday's national semifinal contest against Dowling is a school record, one he has held since midway through his junior year at NKU.
Beattie's boot has accounted for 63 percent of the Norse offense this season, as he has either scored or assisted 40 of NKU's 63 goals in 2010.
Beattie has piled up the individual accolades during his storied career at NKU. He is a four-time All-Great Lakes Valley Conference honoree, a three-time first-team All-Region selection, a three-time GLVC and Midwest Region Player of the Year selection and also earned the 2008 Ron Lenz National Player of the Year award.
Andrews, a sophomore from Skerries, Ireland, has anchored the “Norse Wall” defensive unit all season, helping to keep opposing teams to just 22 goals in 23 games this season, including seven shutouts. Andrews also played a pivotal role in the NKU offense, tallying a pair of goals and standing second on the team with nine assists. Andrews was a first team All-GLVC and All-Midwest Region selection.
The Norse (18-2-3) take the field Thursday evening in the NCAA Division II national semifinals against Dowling. Kickoff is scheduled for 8 p.m.
